 | WORKING FOR COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM
Immigration is a complicated and emotional issue, but we can no longer ignore the need for a comprehensive solution to this crisis. We need orderly, legal avenues for immigration that include pathways to citizenship. At the same time, however, we need a better approach to knowing who is coming in and out of our country. It’s vital that we offer workers a fair wage, which will help all entry-level employees and boost their impact on the economy. Equally important is providing worker protections and an education system that help bring all families into their communities.
As we address immigration reform we must look beyond ineffective enforcement-only policies to address the nearly 12 million undocumented workers already in the country. While a strong relationship between federal immigration enforcement officials and members of our local community is essential to ensuring that our immigration laws are enforced, both sides must make every effort to maintain a level of trust. Recent immigration raids in our neighborhoods conducted by the United States Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) have had the opposite effect. There are better ways to enforce our immigration laws than through such raids, which do little more than cause widespread panic in our community, particularly among our children.
On the Federal level, I continue to work with my colleagues in the California Delegation in the House and the Senate to demand full and comprehensive answers from ICE regarding their policies and procedures regarding such raids. In May of last year, the subcommittee I chair held a hearing in the House Subcommittee on Workforce Protections on the impact ICE raids are having on families and children and asked ICE to explain how it is protecting children during these raids. I have also received personal briefings from ICE officials and am working with them to ensure that they are more responsive to local concerns.
It is important to realize that none of this would be happening if we had a sound and meaningful immigration policy. Immigration continues to be an asset to this country and to California, and I will continue to fight to develop a policy that is both fair and humane, and offers a sensible solution to illegal immigration.
