Woolsey Secures $1 Million for Angel Island, Urges Interior Secretary to Review Drakes Bay Study
October 30, 2009
WASHINGTON, DC—Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.) has secured $1 million for renovation of the historic Angel Island Immigration Station in San Francisco Bay.

The money will be used to restore the station’s original hospital building which will be incorporated into the site’s museum.

“The Angel Island Immigration Station contributes greatly to our understanding of the rich and complex immigration history of the San Francisco Bay area by hosting more than 50,000 people, including 30,000 schoolchildren, each year,” said Woolsey.

“Because of severe deterioration, however, many of the historic buildings are in danger of collapsing and in desperate need of repair. That’s why, along with Speaker Pelosi,  I requested $1 million to rehabilitate the old Angel Island Immigration Station hospital so that it can be used, among other things, as a museum to tell the story of immigration from Asia to the United States.”

The funding was included in the Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2010, which the House passed on Thursday.

The appropriations act also included a provision by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, (D-Calif) that authorizes Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to decide whether the Drakes Bay Oyster Co. can continue operations in the Point Reyes National Seashore for 10 more years after its lease expires in 2012.

“I urge Secretary Salazar to thoroughly review a recent study by The National Academy of Sciences that found that there is little evidence the oyster operation has had a harmful effect on the marine environment of Drakes Estero,” said Woolsey.

The legislation now moves to the Senate.
