| Woolsey Applauds Energy Grant to San Rafael Firm | | October 26, 2009 | |
 | WASHINGTON, DC—PAX Streamline, a San Rafael product development firm, was awarded a $3 million grant Monday by an Energy Department program that supports high-risk, high-reward energy research.
The money will be used to help develop “blown wing” technology for wind turbines, which allows turbines to be dynamically adjusted to maximize power under a wide range of wind conditions. The PAX Streamline design can be manufactured for a fraction of the cost of older, less powerful designs.
The grant was among 37 totaling $151 million awarded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, or ARPA-E, a program created in the America COMPETES Act, which Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Petulama) helped pass as a member of the House Science and Technology Committee.
“I am delighted that PAX Streamline received this grant,” said Woolsey. “It is the cutting-edge research we had in mind when we created ARPA-E in the America COMPETES Act, a project we need to support as we pursue our goal of becoming free from fossil fuels.”
President George W. Bush signed the agency into law in 2007 but did not propose funding for it. It got its first appropriation in the stimulus act, $400 million to be spent over two years.
PAX Streamline, launched in 2007, specializes in improving the energy efficiency and overall effectiveness of fluid-related industrial equipment. |
